A Culture of Openness

Born in 1951, Mohamed Ayachi Ajroudi hails from Gabès, a city in southeastern Tunisia. He grew up in a family of military officers who transitioned from the French Army to the Tunisian Army following Tunisia’s independence in 1956. His grandfather served as a non-commissioned officer in the French Army during World War I, his father was a commander, and his uncle served as chief of staff.

Mohamed Ayachi Ajroudi’s father encouraged him to pursue studies in France. As a young teenager, he left his native Tunisia for Lille, where he joined the National Merchant Marine School of Saint-Malo in 1967. Over the next five years, Mohamed Ayachi Ajroudi sailed across the seas and oceans before leaving the Navy in 1972 with the rank of Lieutenant. He then enrolled at the Lille School of Engineering (E.I.L., now Polytech) and graduated in 1978 with a specialization in hydraulics.
